Pahlaj Nihalani responds to his sacking from the post of Chairman of CBFC, Prasoon Joshi to begin with good intent
The lyricist Prasoon Joshi will replace Pahlaj Nihalani as the Chairman of CBFC
Pahlaj Nihalani sacked after series of controversies which exposed his double standards and his obsessive claim of sanitizing film industry
On Friday, the film industry witnessed a welcome change which was being demanded for quite some time now. Pahlaj Nihalani was sacked as the CBFC chief and Prasoon Joshi was announced to be the new CBFC chief. Read below to know how Pahlaj Nihalani and Prasoon Joshi reacted to the news.
Pahlaj Nihalani was appointed as the CBFC chief in 2015 but soon a string of controversies followed with Nihalani’s attempt to sanitize the film industry by asking producers and directors for innumerable cuts and sometimes banning films like ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ and ‘Udta Punjab’ for not being ‘sanskari’ enough. The recent victim of his wrath was the film ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ which was given an ‘A’ certificate but was asked for 48 cuts.
In a report by IANS, the producer and ex-chairman of CBFC Nihalani expressed his opinions about his sacking and said that he was prepared for it. He said, “I had been preparing myself for my exit for months now. Actually, from the time I came in there have been elements working against me, some of them from within the CBFC. These elements — I’m not going to name them on-record are currently celebrating premature Diwali. Unka toh tyohaar mere jaane se ho gaya (They are in a festive mood because of my ouster).”
When asked about whether he was disappointed at the decision and of leaving CBFC, he said, “None at all. Believe me, I was brought in as the CBFC chairperson all a sudden. I happily took up the job that the government thought me fit for. Now when the government has asked me to step down, I do so without any regret. It was a big challenge while it lasted. When I came in, there was rampant corruption in the CBFC. I got rid of all the middlemen and touts who made money in the censor certification process. They too must be celebrating Diwali in advance this year.”
Nihalani further stated that he does not regret anything he has done till now and said, “Do I have any regrets? None at all. I worked in all sincerity and with utmost honesty. In the process, I offended a Alot of the so-called progressive elements.”
Pahlaj Nihalani added, “I also got labelled a ‘Sanskari’ censor chief. I am proud of that label. I hope I am remembered as the CBFC chairperson who took a firm stand against vulgarity and pseudo-liberalism, no matter how unpopular it made me.”
Prasoon Joshi, who is replacing Nihalani spoke to PTI after the news went viral and said, “Good intent is the best beginning. Bearing responsibility and doing my best has been my endeavour. I have believed that right and responsibilities are better served with constructive contribution. One hopes to make a positive difference with the guidance and support of respected minds,”
The lyricist will be the chairperson of CBFC for three years or further orders from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
There were changes in the Board committee as well with the inclusion of Vidya Balan who said, “I look forward to this new and exciting phase where our cinema will be allowed to reflect the sensibilities, realities and complexities of the society we are living in today.”
